The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
I never really imagined reading a story told by a gorilla, but now I can say that I have. Katherine Applegate has wriiten a heart-warming tale using simple narrative and engaging characters all told from the perspective of Ivan the gorilla. I enjoyed the story (which was inspired by a real gorilla), and I think many animal loving students will also like it. Applegate's style is easy to read yet full of emotion. I look forward to recommending this one when I get a copy for the library. I think it would make for a great read aloud as well.

Junonia
Junonia by Kevin Henkes
My rating: 2 of 5 stars
Junonia is one of those books I wanted to like much more than I actually liked it. Kevin Henkes is a wonderful author, and I was so excited to read this one. However, I feel this story was a bit too simple and I'm not sure many children are going to buy into the book. The idea of vacation, family traditions, and growing up are all so accessible and familiar, but I wanted more action. It will be interesting to see how this one does in the library.

Camo Girl
Camo Girl by Kekla Magoon
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
I really enjoyed this book. I'm excited to share it with older students at my school. I found the characters in this contemporary, realistic fiction book believable and interesting. The theme of friendship and family and differences will ring true for many readers I think. Also, Magoon's writing style is easy to read and poignant - a combination that is not always easy to achieve.
